Light, Salt, and Leaven

The mission of the Church is to change the world. When Jesus describes his followers, he uses three images. He calls us light, salt, and leaven (yeast). Interestingly, these three images share a common thread: none of them exists for it’s own sake. No one stares at a lantern. No one eats a plate of salt or a leaven sandwhich. Light, salt, and leaven are items that are meant to have an effect on other items. A lantern illuminates the world around us. Salt flavors food. Leaven makes bread rise. This is their purpose: to change the world around them.
