St. Thomas Aquinas’ sister approached him one day with the question, “What do I have to do to become a saint?” Thomas, who wrote brilliant volumes on the subject, gave her a two word answer: “Will it!”
The saint was telling his sister that respectability, avoiding serious sin, and going most of the way are not enough. A refined mediocrity, so common even among religiously-minded people, does not respond to the greatest commandment, a total love for God.
